The Gas Safe Register has introduced a new service to enable customers to check if an engineer is fully registered and legal.
This new service is a text-based service that offers greater protection for the consumer.
The system works by texting the word GAS along with the business registration number or the engineer’s 7 digit license number to 85080. In both cases the sender will receive a message informing them if the engineer is registered.
Providing the Engineer has provided a photograph, the consumer can also request a copy of the photo to be texted to them to further reduce the risk of an illegitimate engineer.
With 100,000 home improvement projects unwillingly employing illegal engineers and 1 in 7 of these jobs being found to be 'immediately dangerous', the new service is a welcome tool in the crackdown of illegal engineers.
